5 transforming technologies and its impact in 21st century
Naveen Ravuri Dec 1, 2021
In 21st century, technology has changed our life better, by adding many conveniences. For better future, organizations should replace age old technologies with the latest developments, as they have great impact in business, medical, education, and manufacturing sectors. I do support this argument, as majority of people in present world, cannot live without technology.
Let us look at the top 5 technologies which we call as game changers today.
1. Artificial Intelligence:
What is Artificial Intelligence? Why people call this as a crazy tool in present world? Will this replace humans in near future? Well, well, well. To put an end to all these questions, before we make any guesses, let’s get in depth to understand what exactly AI is.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a tool to build smart machines, for performing problem solving and decision-making capabilities of a human mind (Batok, 2020). In present world Artificial Intelligence can be found in most of the gadgets, but only few have been the game changers. Travel navigation, smartphones, drones, smart cars are the best examples to prove the effectiveness of Artificial Intelligence.
Research shows that, few organizations like Amazon and Walmart have invested heavily in Artificial Intelligence associated drones, which can be used for delivery services, without the human presence (Paris, 2019). On other hand, smart cars use AI to operate self-driving cars, without the need of a person to control. There might be a question in your mind by now; will AI replace humans in near future. Answer for this would be certainly no. Study shows, humans are always essential for any workforce, and AI can only be replaced with humans in accomplishing difficult tasks, within short span. This also makes way for people spending quality time by reducing work stress, instead of getting struck at difficult task. According to an article written by, a project conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers estimated that, Artificial Intelligence technology could increase GDP by $15.7 trillion which is 14% up by 2030 (West & Allen, 2018). China alone is investing $150billion in AI to become a global leader by 2030 (West & Allen, 2018). While some analysts believe Artificial Intelligence has changed the world, some consider as Artificial Intelligence has entered the world little early, it might be dangerous if landed in wrong hands. But the chances of odds are very less compared to positives which we have in Artificial Intelligence, which many people say as game changer.

2. Autonomous Vehicles:
Well, like all other technologies, even Autonomous Vehicles are categorized into different types. Level 0, Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, Level 4, Level 5 (Synopsys). Level 0 vehicles are those, which human has complete control, but not the vehicle. Whereas in level 1, Vehicle’s Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) helps to control either of steering or breaks, but not to full extent. In level 2, ADAS helps to control steering, brakes, and acceleration. But human attention is always needed. Similarly in level 3, Advance Driving System (ADS) can take control of the vehicle in most of the conditions. However, humans need to be attentive so that, if ADS couldn’t perform in specific conditions, humans need to take control immediately. In level 4, ADS performs all the tasks in some conditions without the human presence. Above all, the technology which we all call it as future is level 5. This level 5 technology is fully automated, and ADS helps vehicle to control in all conditions without any human presence/involvement. It also senses the outside environment, nearby human crossings, passing vehicles, and signals as well. Now, this is what we call it as future, as many organizations started working on fully autonomous Level 5 vehicles.

3. Voice Assistant:
A voice assistant is a digital tool that uses voice recognition, language processing algorithms, and voice synthesis to listen to specific voice commands, and then return relevant information as requested by user. (Alan, 2020). In present world, do you really think one need to open their devices, start typing whatever they need or search for a particular thing? No right. We have many voice assistants which can help us in doing so. We have Siri in IOS devices, Alexa in Android devices, Cortana in Windows. These virtual assistants are trying to make our life better. With the help of this digital assistant, you can control your mobile, laptop or even a vehicle to an extent. With the help of input we provide, voice assistant tries to analyze and give required output.
Voice assistants are creating a huge impact in 21st century. More and more companies are trying to replace age old technologies, call support services with voice assistant. I can help you with a best example for this. An Indian bank named City Union Bank Ltd., has started using voice assistant robot for all banking needs, and named robot as CUB Lakshmi (Mishra, 2019). Once you approach the robot and ask for the services which you are looking for, immediately robot responds with appropriate output. Now, the real challenge you might face is in identifying the best voice assistant in the present world. According to research conducted by Zdnet, “Siri” which is operated by apple turned out to be the best voice assistant (Tung, 2019), which can understand multiple languages, creating, performing, and responding to tasks (Cipriani, 2021). In this modern era, having this voice assistant as you daily tool, makes your life more and more comfortable and easier.

Augmented reality (AR) is and experience where designers enhance parts of user’s physical world with computer-generated input (Pesce). Let’s keep the textbook definitions aside. In real world, Augmented reality is a tool which projects computer generated inputs physically in real world (Greenwald, 2021).
How can be this different from Virtual reality? Now, virtual reality is a tool which is designed to take you/to imagine yourself in a different place wherever you like. Whereas Augmented reality projects the objects or other places at your place in real world. Augmented reality tool is latest enhancement in the technology, which is attracting clients. Let me make it clear with an example. IKEA, to provide users with best shopping experience, uses AR tool to select their range of products. You simply need to open IKEA app, select your desired product, and then scan an open area where you want to project the object. That simple it is to present computer-generated image in real world. This is how AR is attracting clients by making their life simple. According to article written by Porter and James (Porter & Heppelmann, 2017), combing machines with humans’ strength will lead to far greater productivity and more of value creation.

5. Digital Payments:
A Digital payment is the transfer of value from one payment account to another using a digital device such as mobile phone, Point of sales, wireless data or SWIFT (n.d.). Earlier days, if a person need to make a transfer, he need to visit bank, fill a form, and then wait for couple of days for transaction to be done. But now, you have multiple options to do them. You can use mobile banking, internet banking, web-based transfers, QR code transfer and other transfer service providers. All these types of digital payments are future of financial services.

To summarize; no matter how small the technology is, there are many revolutionary changes happening across the globe, and there is no stopping for innovation. Entrepreneurs tend to create inspiring and useful technologies every day, which not only make our life easier, but also create a way for bright future.
